Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor officially entered the state’s Gubernatorial race on Tuesday, and discussed some of the issues he plans to campaign on. He also touted his similarities to President Trump.
Jones debuted his bid in a campaign video, and said on the social media platform X that, ‘I’ve also fought to deliver President Trump’s agenda here in Georgia from day one,’ referencing his early efforts as a Trump campaign co-chair.
The gubernatorial hopeful started his campaign off with a sizable self loan of 10 million dollars. In addition to serving as Lieutenant Governor, Jones is involved in his family’s business, Jones Petroleum, and founded a retail insurance brokerage, JP Capital & Insurance.
He also rolled out what he calls his, ‘bold game plan’ which promises to eliminate the state income tax, bolster fentanyl penalties including the death penalty, and tighten the states illegal immigration laws.
In his campaign finance filings, the Lieutenant Governor revealed his leadership committee holds at least $14.3 million, positioning him well ahead of his closest Republican rival, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr. Carr has raised close to $3.5 million so far. Marjorie Taylor Greene has also not yet ruled out a potential run for the Governor’s seat.
With plenty of money and strong ties to President Trump, Burt Jones’ entrance into the Georgia’s Governor’s race is likely to shake it up.
