Georgia state investigators announced the arrests of two former government officials in separate misconduct cases, one involving alleged sexual contact with a probationer and another involving alleged theft of firearms from a sheriff’s office.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said Michael Smith, 54, of Covington, a former Department of Community Supervision (DCS) probation officer, was charged with three counts of Improper Sexual Contact by an Employee or Agent in the First Degree. DCS asked GBI in November 2025 to investigate an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a probation officer and a probationer, and Smith was booked into the Rockdale County Jail May 29, the agency said.
GBI announced former Thomas County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) Chief Deputy Ron James, 55, of Thomasville, was charged with Theft by Taking and Violation of Oath of Office. Thomas County Sheriff Tim Watkins asked the state agency April 8 to investigate allegations that James stole multiple firearms belonging to TCSO, and James was booked into the Thomas County Jail May 29, GBI said.
The Thomas County case has already prompted broader questions about oversight. WALB reported county government officials are looking to audit the sheriff’s office over unauthorized spending allegations involving James and a subordinate, while Watkins said he would personally sign off on future TCSO purchases.
Both investigations remain active. GBI said Smith’s case will be given to the Rockdale County District Attorney’s Office, while James’ case will be given to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office once complete. The charges are allegations, and both men should be treated as innocent unless convicted in court.
