The University System of Georgia (USG) is expanding its academic offerings to address the growing demand for artificial intelligence expertise. The USG Board of Regents has approved the system’s first-ever Bachelor of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence, which will be offered at Middle Georgia State University (MGA). The program, scheduled to launch this coming August at MGA’s Warner Robins campus, aims to prepare students for careers in industries that are increasingly reliant on AI technology.

The new degree program is designed to equip students with both technical AI skills and a broader understanding of the field’s implications. It will integrate traditional computer science coursework with AI-specific studies, while also incorporating business and psychology components. MGA officials believe this interdisciplinary approach will provide graduates with a well-rounded education that meets the needs of Georgia’s evolving workforce.

AI is playing a crucial role in industries such as cybersecurity, healthcare, and logistics, and Georgia’s growing tech sector continues to create job opportunities in these fields. The Port of Savannah and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are among the state’s transportation hubs that depend on AI-driven solutions for supply chain optimization and operational efficiency. In Middle Georgia, the program is expected to benefit students seeking opportunities at Robins Air Force Base, where AI is increasingly vital for operations.

The program will launch with an initial enrollment of approximately 65 students, with the expectation of reaching 168 students by its fourth year. MGA plans to begin by utilizing faculty from its Department of Computer Science, with additional professors specializing in AI to be hired as the program expands.

Beyond technical training, students will explore the legal and ethical implications of artificial intelligence. MGA officials emphasize the importance of ensuring that graduates not only understand AI’s capabilities but also its societal impact.

Students interested in learning more about the Applied AI program can visit MGA’s School of Computing website at mga.edu.
