A fatal shooting on Saturday morning at Fort Eisenhower in Augusta led to a temporary lockdown and the cancellation of post activities. Officials confirmed that neither the victim nor the suspect were active-duty members of the Army.
The shooting occurred in a housing unit on the base, resulting in the death of one individual. An alert was issued at approximately 8:30 a.m., urging personnel to follow lockdown procedures. The lockdown lasted for two hours before an all-clear was issued. Events scheduled for Saturday, including activities related to the Army-Navy football game, were subsequently canceled.
The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), which is leading the investigation, stated that the incident appears isolated and poses no ongoing threat to the public. Names of the victim and the suspect have not been released, with officials citing the need to notify the victim’s family. Major General Ryan Janovic, the commanding general of the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Eisenhower, stated a press conference on the event that “The family deserves time to process this tragedy.”
Hours after the shooting, the suspect was apprehended approximately three hours away in Meriwether County. According to Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith, deputies received a description of the suspect’s vehicle, a white Camry with a Tennessee license plate, heading south on Interstate 85. Deputies intercepted the vehicle around the 29-mile marker at 10:45 a.m.
During the traffic stop, deputies witnessed the suspect discard a handgun out of the car’s passenger-side window. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office before being handed over to the Army CID.
Sheriff Smith commended the deputies and supporting agencies for their swift and effective response, emphasizing the risks involved in high-stakes encounters like this one.
The Army CID is collaborating with state and federal authorities as part of the ongoing investigation. Further details, including the identities of those involved, remain under wraps as the investigation continues.
