Georgia’s early voting period officially begins on October 15th and will run until November 1st, offering residents a head start to avoid long lines on Election Day. Legal experts are advising voters to familiarize themselves with their polling locations and voting rights to ensure a smooth process.

According to Alicia Hughes, assistant professor at Emory University School of Law, a significant portion of Georgia’s electorate—potentially around 20%—is expected to participate in early or absentee voting during this two-week period. Hughes noted that many voters are seeking to bypass the long wait times experienced during the 2020 election, a concern amplified by Georgia’s population growth, which saw an increase of over 315,000 residents between 2020 and 2023.

With key issues such as border policies and international conflicts like the ongoing situation between Israel and Palestine motivating many voters, early turnout is projected to be substantial. Hughes emphasized that it is essential for voters to prepare by confirming their polling locations ahead of time.

Unlike Election Day, early voting offers flexibility by allowing voters to cast their ballots at any polling place within their county, rather than being limited to a specific assigned location. Georgians can search for available early voting sites through the Secretary of State’s website or by accessing their My Voter Page.

Voters opting to cast their ballots on Election Day, November 5th, must be in line by 7 p.m. to ensure their vote is counted, in accordance with Georgia law.
