The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is accusing Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia of taking credit for military construction projects after voting against the final package that enacted them.
The July 30 criticism followed a Fox News review of Ossoff’s record. Republicans cited $127.4 million for a replacement Dexter Elementary School at Fort Benning and $8 million to design an aircraft maintenance hangar at Fort Stewart, both included in the fiscal 2026 package.
Ossoff, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, voted for H.R. 3944 Aug. 1, 2025. The Senate package containing military construction and agriculture appropriations passed 87-9. His office said it included $556 million for nearly a dozen Georgia projects, the state’s largest military construction allocation since 2010.
Congress later placed the military construction provisions in H.R. 5371, which fully funded military construction, veterans affairs, agriculture and the legislative branch while temporarily funding the rest of government. Ossoff voted against the final package Nov. 10. It passed 60-40 and became law two days later.
An Ossoff spokesperson told Fox News Georgia’s military construction funding resulted directly from his subcommittee work. The spokesperson said his final opposition reflected the package’s failure to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia accused Ossoff of using veterans as “props.”
Ossoff has continued highlighting military issues, including a July report on mold, lead exposure, flooding and pest problems in privatized housing at Forts Benning and Stewart. The dispute is whether he can claim credit for provisions he helped advance after opposing the larger measure that ultimately carried them into law. The clash comes as Ossoff seeks a second term against Republican Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia.
