President Donald Trump will visit Wheeler High School in Marietta Wednesday to promote Trump Accounts, a new federal program offering tax-advantaged investment accounts for children and a one-time $1,000 Treasury contribution for eligible young children.
The Cobb County School District announced the visit July 16, saying the event will highlight education and student achievement. A White House spokesperson said the accounts are intended to give children “a head start in life” and a financial stake in their future. Spectrum News reported Trump is scheduled to speak at the school July 22.
Under Internal Revenue Service rules, an account may be opened for a child who is under 18 at the end of the election year and has a valid Social Security number. The one-time $1,000 Treasury contribution is limited to U.S. citizen children born from Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2028.
Parents, relatives, employers and others can generally contribute a combined $5,000 annually, while employer deposits are capped at $2,500 and count toward that limit. IRS instructions say contributions began July 4, and families may establish accounts by submitting Form 4547 or using the agency’s online process.
During a child’s growth period, money must be invested in qualifying mutual funds or exchange-traded funds tracking primarily U.S. companies. Federal guidance generally bars withdrawals before the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18; afterward, the account is treated largely like a traditional individual retirement account.
Treasury said July 15 that more than 6.5 million families had enrolled, including over 1.5 million children eligible for the federal seed contribution. The department launched the full program app July 4, allowing families to view balances and make deposits.
Trump’s Marietta appearance will place the administration’s program before students and families in Georgia’s second-largest school district.
