Authorities are trying to identify multiple people after a man was surrounded, punched, kicked and dragged during a group beating near Ellis Square in downtown Savannah.

The attack happened Wednesday night on West Congress Street, WJCL reported. Video shows several people striking the man after he fell, including one person repeatedly kicking and stomping on his head. Chatham County Sheriff Richard Coleman described the scene as a “very, very brutal beating.”

The victim was taken to a hospital for an assessment, and Coleman said the man appeared to be in “pretty bad shape” when they met, WTOC reported. Investigators are examining three possible suspects, but the sheriff’s office has not released any names while the inquiry remains active.

Authorities are reviewing a separate video recorded Saturday night in the same area. That footage shows two men fighting on West Congress Street before one runs toward Barnard Street and an officer intervenes. Coleman said both incidents were unacceptable and pledged to identify everyone involved.

The videos renew questions about late-night safety near Ellis Square. A May 2025 shooting near Congress and Barnard streets injured four people after police said a fight between two groups escalated into gunfire. WJCL reported in a one-year follow-up that the shooting remained unresolved as of May 2026.

Investigators have not publicly explained what preceded Wednesday’s attack, identified the victim or announced any arrests or charges. The recording captures the assault but may not show the events leading up to it, making witness accounts and additional surveillance footage important to establishing the full sequence. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active.
