The Georgia State Election Board has voted 3-0 to investigate whether election boards in eight counties are failing to properly handle mass challenges questioning voter eligibility. The investigation follows claims that the local election boards in Athens-Clarke, Bibb, Cobb, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Jackson counties may be dismissing cases without sufficient scrutiny.
The inquiry centers on allegations that tens of thousands of voter challenges, largely targeting voter registration lists, have not been thoroughly investigated. The board voted to have its executive director report findings by the next meeting on October 8.
This investigation comes amid heightened tensions around voter eligibility challenges, a recurring issue in Georgia since the 2020 presidential election. Conservative activists argue that Georgia’s voter registration lists contain numerous ineligible voters, including individuals who have moved or are registered at incorrect addresses. On the other hand, progressive groups view these mass challenges as attempts to intimidate and disenfranchise voters who remain eligible. Georgia’s state law prohibits removing voters from the rolls within 45 days of an election, adding complexity to the timing of voter list purges.
The investigation comes after some election officials hesitated to move forward with challenges, reportedly due to threats of legal action from Democratic lawyer Marc Elias. Election Board member Janice Johnston expressed concerns that this interference might have prevented officials from fulfilling their duties to investigate voter challenges.
A previous lawsuit involving the group True the Vote and Fair Fight Action also highlighted the controversy surrounding voter eligibility. Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that True the Vote did not violate the Voting Rights Act when it challenged the eligibility of thousands of voters ahead of the 2021 U.S. Senate runoffs.
As the investigation unfolds, both sides of the political divide are likely to continue debating the handling of mass voter challenges and the balance between voter integrity and voter suppression.
