Georgia Governor Brian Kemp enjoyed President Trump’s support in his campaign in 2018 but had a very public split with him over the 2020 election. In 2022 the former President endorsed Kemp’s primary opponent, former US Senator David Perdue.

Now, as attention turns back to Presidential politics, Kemp has pledged to support the Republican ticket.

“I am going to support the Republican ticket from the bottom of the ticket all the way up to the top,” Kemp told 11 Alive’s Faith Jessie. “And I’ve had people ask me, you know, ‘why are you going to vote for somebody that was so mad at you and said so many bad things about you,” he said. “Just simply because I think they’d be a better president than Joe Biden’s been.”

Kemp stopped short of endorsing President Trump by name, but emphasized the party as a whole and the strength of Republican ground game and fundraising apparatus to help turn out votes.

Other national Republicans who have been critical of Trump in the past made appearances at the Republican National Convention including former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Republicans continue to hold solid majorities at a state level in Georgia, but the state has trended Democrat nationally, giving it’s 16 electoral votes to Joe Biden in 2020 and sending two Progressive Democrats to the US Senate.
