Republican John Cowan won Georgia’s 11th Congressional District seat, defeating Democratic challenger Chris Harden. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening.
Cowan campaigned on lowering health insurance premiums, expanding patient choice and providing tax relief for families and small businesses. A neurosurgeon and business owner, he also backed congressional term limits, stronger ethics rules and a ban on stock trading by members of Congress. Harden, an attorney, emphasized lowering everyday costs, expanding health care access, creating good-paying jobs and strengthening government accountability.
The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Republican heading into the election. The seat opened when Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk opted to retire. Cowan secured the Republican nomination in a June runoff, defeating Rob Adkerson with approximately 65% of the vote. His general election victory keeps the seat in GOP hands and sends him to Washington for his first two-year term.
