Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath won a fifth term in Congress, defeating Republican challenger Kevin Martin in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday night. With 39% of votes counted, McBath had received 84.3%, compared with Martin’s 15.7%.
McBath campaigned on preventing gun violence, lowering health care costs and supporting small businesses and veterans. During her latest term, she helped introduce the Gun Safety Incentive Act, proposing incentives for gun owners to securely store firearms. Martin emphasized greater state control over education funding, expanding access to technical training and requiring closer scrutiny of federal spending.
The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Democratic heading into the election. The district covers portions of Atlanta’s western suburbs, including communities in Cobb, Douglas, Fulton and Fayette counties. First elected in 2018, McBath became a national gun safety advocate after her teenage son, Jordan Davis, was killed in 2012. Her victory secures another two-year term and keeps the seat in Democratic hands.
