Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop won an 18th term representing Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Matt Day. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening.
Bishop campaigned on creating jobs, expanding health care access and supporting veterans, military families and agriculture. During his latest term, he served as the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee overseeing agriculture and rural development spending, advocating funding for farmers and rural communities. Day, a retired construction executive, emphasized applying his business experience to economic development and reforming pharmacy benefit manager practices that he argues hurt patients and independent pharmacies.
The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Democratic heading into the election. The southwest Georgia district includes Albany, Americus and portions of Columbus and Macon, combining agricultural communities with regional population centers. First elected in 1992, Bishop secured another two-year term in Washington, keeping the seat in Democratic hands.
