Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson won an 11th term representing Georgia’s 4th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Jim Duffie. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening. With 17% of votes counted, Johnson had received 72.7%, compared with Duffie’s 27.3%.
Johnson campaigned on expanding affordable health care, protecting civil liberties and strengthening accountability in the federal judiciary. During his latest term, he helped introduce legislation to strengthen Supreme Court ethics oversight and proposed requiring federal judges and justices to place financial assets in blind trusts to prevent conflicts of interest. Duffie emphasized conservative leadership, government accountability and support for the FairTax proposal to replace federal income taxes with a national consumption tax.
The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Democratic heading into the election. Covering parts of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties in Atlanta’s eastern suburbs, the district remains a Democratic stronghold. First elected in 2006, Johnson secured another two-year term in Washington, keeping the seat in Democratic hands.
